URI vice president retires after 30 years

University of Rhode Island

Tom Dougan, vice president of student affairs for the University of Rhode Island (URI), recently retired after 30 years in service to the university.

Around 300 people, a mix of students, faculty, staff and retirees, attended an event in honor of Dugan.

“Wow, this is truly amazing,” Dougan said at the gathering. “I want to thank (President Emeritus) Bob Carothers for hiring me as vice president, and I want to thank President Dave Dooley for all of his support. He is the kind of president any vice president in the country would want to work for.”

Dougan praised the attendees for their help in guiding students and those who worked day-in and day-out, helping all who come to the university achieve unparalleled success.

Rep. Raymond Gallison, chair of the Finance Committee of the Rhode Island House of Representatives, and Rep. Kathleen Fogarty read citations at the event. University President David Dooley then read a citation from Providence Mayor Jorge Elorza, a graduate of URI.

Dougan’s career has been filled with accomplishments, from helping the university make enormous strides in housing and dining operations to reviving a moribund fraternity and sorority system.
