Freeman Hrabowski, president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore County since 1992, will deliver the 2016 Bonner and Bonner Diversity Lecture at Emporia State University in March.
An educator well known for his work to increase minorities’ participation in science, math and technology, Hrabowski will speak on civic leadership for the common good.
Hrabowski has an outstanding track record in education and leadership. President Barack Obama named him the chair of the newly created President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for African Americans. He also chaired the National Academies’ Committee that released a 2011 report entitled “Expanding Underrepresented Minority Participation: America’s Science and Technology Talent at the Crossroads.”
A recipient of multiple awards for leadership, including the TIAA-CREF’s Theodore M. Hesburgh Award for Leadership Excellence in 2011, Hrabowski continuously influences education, leadership and diversity in America. In 2012, he was named one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World by Time.
Hrabowski’s Emporia State lecture is titled “Rethinking Education in America: A Fifty Year Perspective.”
The lecture will be held at 7 p.m. on March 3 in Albert Taylor Hall on the Emporia State campus. Tickets are free to the public, but seats must be reserved.
