More than 350 industry and academic representatives convened at the University of Manchester for the first Sir Henry Royce Institute workshop.
“It was fantastic to get such an excellent turnout for what was a very important first step in establishing the Sir Henry Royce Institute for Advanced Materials Research as the world’s center for advanced materials,” Professor Colin Bailey, the university’s deputy president and deputy vice chancellor, said.
Bailey spoke to those in attendance – including scientists, engineers, investors and members of commercial organizations – about establishing the center, which will focus on advanced materials research and innovation.
Housed at the University of Manchester, the $334 million institute will partner with other esteemed universities, including Sheffield, Leeds, Liverpool, Cambridge, Oxford and Imperial College London.
The institute’s goal is to help the United Kingdom grow its world-class research and innovation as it relates to advanced-materials science – a science fundamental to all industrial sectors and the national economy.
The event itself brought together the U.K.’s leading experts in different areas of advanced material research. Delegates broke into sessions looking at nine specific areas of advanced materials, including nuclear materials and 2D materials.
Recommendations and ideas from the sessions will be used for research.
