Nine fashion students from Philadelphia University won $5,000 scholarships from the YMA Scholarship fund – the most ever in a single year.

The winners were announced at the annual Geoffrey Beene National Scholarship Awards Dinner Jan. 12 at the New York Marriott Marquis Hotel.

The winning PhilaU students were Megan Belz, Madeline Bill, Nicole Braun, Vivian Cooper, Maria D’Agostino,  Meghan DeMeglio, Melissa Hummer, Julia Pogue and Emily Van Horn.

“The YMA scholarship is a very prestigious award given to highly qualified fashion students,” Beth Mariotz, director of fashion merchandising and management, said. “The PhilaU students are to be commended for their dedication and commitment to their discipline.”

The awards dinner is a major event in the fashion industry. The students mingled with memorable icons throughout the event and scholarship winners also attended a career fair the next day to meet with hiring managers from top fashion companies.

The YMA-FSF attracted 400 applicants from 48 member schools this year.

“I was thrilled and honored to be one of the winners of the YMA scholarship,” Cooper, a junior fashion design student studying in Rome this semester, said. “It was so rewarding to have all of my hard work pay off. This scholarship has already given me so many connections and I am truly grateful to Philadelphia University and the FSF for giving me this amazing opportunity.”
