The 88-acre lake at Berry College, the world’s largest campus, in Rome, Georgia, has been renamed for its famous residents.
Eagle Lake is home to bald eagles, likely due to an abundant source of food for the birds of prey. While there is a rather large population, two eagles in particular -- known as the Berry College Eagles -- nest in a tall pine tree on the main campus, from which live stream cameras broadcast their movements. This pair has produced seven eaglets since 2012, with the world watching.
Aside from being home to these eagles, Eagle Lake is also set to become the home of Berry College’s Continuing Care Retirement Community, which will offer residents pristine views of Lavender Mountain and the surrounding woodlands. The development is taking place on land that is part of the 27,000-acre college campus. It will include 150 apartments and cottages, health care and support services, and other amenities, including opportunities for fine dining, recreation, fitness facilities, and health services provided by top regional medical centers.
Berry College President Steve Briggs says he’s amazed at the fame garnered by the eagles and hopes that residents at the senior living community will flock in at the thought of experiencing the interesting habits of the birds firsthand.
