Philip Harmelink, an accounting professor at the University of New Orleans, was recently named the 2016 Business Professional of the Year by Beta Alpha Psi, an international honor organization for financial information.

Harmelink will receive the award at the Beta Alpha Psi national meeting in Baltimore in August, and the school's chapter will gain a $2,000 prize.

Harmelink is the Ernst & Young Professor of Accounting and chairs the Department of Accounting at UNO, where he has worked since 1979. Harmelink won the award because of his exceptional academic contributions, support for UNO’s Beta Alpha Psi chapter, and scholarship fundraising for students in the accounting department.

The award honors Harmelink’s commitment to education. His achievements include several scholarships that have gone to accounting students in the last several years and his work has also helped the accounting department receive recognition for its graduates and excellent programs.

Beta Alpha Psi was established in 1919. There are over 300 different chapters located on university and college campuses, with over 300,000 members in its chapters.
