In only its second year of existence, the women’s rugby team from Simpson College finished fifth in the nation at the National Small College Rugby Organization championships May 1 in Charlotte, North Carolina.

“It’s an incredibly talented young team,” Coach Kelsie McDowell said, praising her team for its chemistry and leadership. “I am very proud of what we have accomplished so far.”

The team finished 19-5 during the regular season, including victories against Iowa, Iowa State and Northern Iowa to give Simpson the Iowa Women’s Showdown title.

The Storm could have earned an at-large bid to the national tournament, but the team wanted to earn its bid on the field. That is when they went to Rochester, Minnesota, to the regional championship where the outscored their opponents 109-10.

McDowell said she is proud of the team and grateful for the support from the school.
