The agreement between Congress and the Trump administration to reach an omnibus bill to fund the government into the new year has far-reaching impacts.

The Association of American Universities (AAU) President Barbara R. Snyder made a statement in support of the FY21 appropriations omnibus package in an AAU press release. Within the statement Snyder urged President Donald Trump to sign it without delay to fund universities, which have been on the front line of developing much-needed vaccines in the fight against COVID-19. She also noted that more is needed to help offset the pandemic’s harmful impacts on federally-funded research, the workforce that produces the research and tomorrow’s leaders.

“We are pleased that Congress and the administration have finally come together to reach a bipartisan agreement which avoids a harmful shutdown, provides important research investments and delivers additional pandemic-related assistance directly to the American people,” Snyder said, the AAU reported in a press release. Even modest boosts to federal support for NASA, the National institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Pell grant maximum award are vital to the government-university partnership that strengthens our nation’s health, economy and security.”
