Lamar sends team to Model UN conferences

Lamar University

Lamar University’s first Model United Nations delegates recently attended their first conference in Washington, D.C., and have begun preparation for their New York conference in March.

Lamar's team members are Tara Hoch, Savannah Parfait, Dillon Nicholson, Nathan Henry, Stephanie Smith, Alejandro Guadian and Ricky Anyanwu.

At the conference, these students debated in formal and informal caucuses with hundreds of students from universities around the world. In various committee meetings, the students set agendas, formed alliances and drafted resolutions.

“The students learned much more by participating in the conference than they ever could have in a classroom,” Lamar's Model United Nations program director and professor Amir Fakhravar said. “I am proud of their hard work in their committees and think they all gained something from the trip.”

At the close of the trip, the students sat with Richard Perle to discuss world issues. Perle, who served as the first Assistant Secretary of Defense for Global Strategic Affairs under President Ronald Reagan, now spends his time as a political adviser.
