UNO alumnus Ross nominated for Grammy Award

University of New Orleans (UNO) alumnus Jamison Ross has been nominated for a 2015 Grammy Award for his aptly named debut jazz album, “Jamison.”

Ross is a smooth jazz drummer who received his master's of music degree from UNO two years ago. The talented artist was picked up by the Los Angeles-based Concord Jazz label, which released his premiere album this year.

Ross is the first UNO alumnus to receive a Grammy nomination. Known as a master drummer, Ross received national acclaim after winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2012 while still studying at UNO.

The self-titled album shows off not only his skills on drums, but also his soulful vocals and songwriting ability. His vocal skills won critical accolades from the jazz community.

The Jacksonville, Florida, native, has seen his skills featured in the documentary film “CHOPS” while studying for his two undergraduate music degrees at the Douglas Anderson School of the Arts. That on top of his awards have made him a go-to percussionist for numerous other artists.

Ross has collaborated Wes Anderson, Jon Batiste, Henry Butler, Billy Childs, Dr. John, Jimmy Heath, Ramsey Lewis, Ellis Marsalis, Wynton Marsalis, Christian McBride, Marcus Roberts, Patrice Rushen, Cecile McLorin Salvant and Snarky Puppy, among others.

The Grammy Awards air Feb. 15 on CBS.
