Jeri Berryman, clinical assistant professor at Ashland University’s Dwight Schar College of Nursing and Health Sciences in Mansfield, was recently named a Certified Nurse Educator.

Berryman joins the program after meeting its strict eligibility criteria and successfully completing testing for her certification that was developed and administered by the National League for Nursing (NLN).

“The NLN’s Academic Nurse Educator Certification program has conferred new visibility and stature upon the academic nursing community that is long overdue,” NLN Chief Executive Officer Beverly Malone said. “Through the certification program, we have made clear to the ranks of higher education that the role of nurse educator is an advanced professional practice discipline with a defined practice setting and demonstrable standards of excellence.”

There are 4,000 certified nursing educators in America, reflecting a variety of academic backgrounds. Malone noted that 33 percent hold doctoral degrees, while the rest hold master’s degrees. At their universities, 28 percent are assistant professors, 15 percent are associate professors and 14 percent are full professors. Additionally, 50 percent have more than a decade of employment experience as nurse educators.

Berryman received her Master of Science in Nursing from Indiana Wesleyan University and her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Ohio State. She has been with Ashland University since 2013.
