The presidential campaign of Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL) has chosen Ashland University President Carlos Campo to be part of the senator’s Religious Liberty Advisory Board.

Rubio’s campaign directors noted that being part of the advisory board doesn’t translate to an endorsement of the candidacy or policies. Campo will be part of a select group of academics and religious leaders to advise Rubio’s campaign on religious liberty issues.

“As an academic leader, I would never publicly endorse a political candidate, but only serve as a resource as appropriate,” Campo said.

Still, it’s a role Campo said he sees as both important and exciting.

“Religious liberty is one of the key issues of our day, and I am pleased to see Sen. Rubio recognize its importance through the formation of this diverse group of advisers,” Campo said. “Our Constitution's insistence on the primacy of religious liberty serves as a cornerstone of democracy in America, and it is our hope that Sen. Rubio and others will keep this issue at the forefront of the upcoming presidential election. It is a privilege to serve in this role and help contribute to the preservation of our rights.”

Campo, whose education is in theater and the arts, was selected to be president of the private Ohio university in April 2015. Before that, Campo led Regent University, the private Christian university founded by Pat Robertson.
