As part of a planned BBC broadcast, the University of Manchester’s Jodrell Bank hosted a studio session watching as Tim Peake carried out the first spacewalk ever completed by a British citizen.
Peake, along with colleague Tim Kopra, ventured out from the International Space Station recently to replace a failed voltage regulator. A studio audience and special guests at Jodrell Bank watched the historic spacewalk as part of BBC’s Stargazing Live program.
“Tim will be taking a giant step for British space exploration with this historic spacewalk – and to have Jodrell Bank sharing this experience live is a real milestone as we celebrate our 70th anniversary,” Jodrell Bank Observatory Director and University of Manchester Professor Tim O’Brien said.
Guests at the event included Chris Hadfield, the first Canadian to walk in space. Hadfield was an engineer and former Royal Canadian Air Force Pilot who spent time as the commander of the International Space Station.
The event was the finale of the latest series of Stargazing Live, an annual event hosted by Bank. It was broadcast on BBC 2.
