Andrew Smith, a standout basketball player and Academic All-American at Butler University who played in two national championship games, passed away Jan. 12 after a two-year battle with cancer.

Four days later, Butler hosted its third annual “Stay Positive Day” game put on by two-time cancer survivor Eric Day, with a goal of raising $25,000 for Smith’s family. On Sunday, Traders Point Christian Church hosted a service commemorating Andrew's life.

The Butler community established the Andrew Smith Scholarship Fund with money donated from many in the community who wanted to show their support for Smith. The scholarship will provide support for future Butler men’s basketball players.

To further remember Smith’s legacy, the Butler team will wear AS44 patches on their jerseys -- representing Andrew Smith and his jersey number 44 -- for the remainder of the season.
