Florida State University recently held its eighth biennial 2016 Art & Design for Social Justice Symposium, which focused on showcasing how art and design can help address issues confronting less advantaged groups throughout the world.

The event, which was sponsored by the departments of Interior Design and Art Education, took place Jan. 18 in the William Johnston Building. It featured multiple presentations on ways art can be avenues of solution in the fight for social justice.

Mark Randall, co-founder of World Studio, gave the keynote address at the symposium. His organization works to bridge the gap between collaborators on design-related social issues to support local communities. Randall is a regular at colleges, universities and industry conferences, speaking about social design.

The university hopes that the event will grow synergy, spawn collaborative projects and create new scholarly initiatives.
