Miami University-Oxford is promoting the online networking site LinkedIn with its students, citing recent success stories.

LinkedIn is a popular online professional networking hub where users can create profiles, post their resumes and search for jobs.

“It is a must-have," Miami professor Mark Lacker said. "It is a place where you can not only put traditional resume information but also to elaborate on portfolio items; add more depth about internship or job experiences and personal interests. And it is a place to learn about companies, see Miami alums working for a company of interest so you can network with them, and increasingly be found by recruiters for jobs they are seeking to fill.”

That's exactly what happened to senior writing major Alicia Auhagen, who out of the blue was contacted by a solar firm in Cincinnati in response to her LinkedIn profile.

“I had never heard of RBI Solar before being contacted by the H.R. rep. and probably never would have if it weren’t for LinkedIn,” Auhagen said.

More than 11,000 Miami students use the site. School officials said they plan to continue encouraging students to sign up by offering free professional profile pictures by a student photographer who is familiar with the site.
