The University of New Orleans announced that after an update by the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, it has retained its status as a doctoral university with higher research activity.

UNO is one of just two universities in the state of Louisiana to hold this classification – the second-highest Carnegie classification that can be achieved.

“We are pleased to maintain our status as an R2 doctoral university,” John Nicklow, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said. “Faculty research and scholarly productivity are an integral part of the university’s heritage and a critical part of our future. This research also broadens and informs the knowledge that we share in the classroom with our students, so that they are equipped to solve today’s increasingly complex problems.”

For more than 45 years, the Carnegie Classification has been the leading system for recognizing and describing institutional diversity in higher education.
