Along with members of the Idaho Education Association (IEA), Boise State alumni took part in a unique opportunity last month to share their experience as educators with those aspiring to careers in the field of education.

The rare opportunity for mentorship attracted top teachers within the IEA, along with previous graduates of educational programs at the university. Idaho Teacher of the Year Melyssa Ferro and others were recognized for their work in the Treasure Valley.

Discussions between these mentors and the individuals aspiring to careers in education spanned a range of topics. Because learning to be an effective teacher is a lifelong goal, there are always new things to learn, and this meeting of the minds recognized the value of firsthand experience.

Aside from the value of education, exchanges in information included knowledge of the many hats teachers are required to wear outside of academics. Classroom management in general, as well as various obstacles and pitfalls, were mentioned, and students were made aware of how teacher evaluations and career opportunities can affect their salaries.

Group discussions broke out later into smaller sessions, allowing students to raise questions that were fielded and entertained by the experts in the field.

The IEA intends to continue presenting these opportunities to students in the future.
