Last week's annual Match Day at Brown University saw a record 113 students from the Alpert Medical School learn where they will be completing their medical residency upon graduation.

The MDs who are graduating in May will launch medical careers at hospitals from coast to coast, and the announcement of these matches is a celebrated tradition for the school.

The record-breaking class was just as excited as ever as the matches were announced, assuring that at least 10 students will stay within the affiliated hospitals in Rhode Island. An additional 38 will be assigned to nearby locations in Boston, New Haven, and other areas of New England.

Jason Bowman, who grew up in Kingston, Rhode Island, was elated to open his envelope and find his assignment to be his first choice as an emergency medicine resident at Massachusetts General Hospital in the Harvard Medical School System.

First choice matches are never guaranteed, so this gave him incredible satisfaction. Other students have been matched to programs that include residencies in surgery, psychiatry, ophthalmology, urology, radiology and other specialties. In addition, 34 students were assigned to programs in internal or family medicine, programs that typically lead to primary care careers.
