The Department of Kinesiology at Boise State is seeking volunteers to participate in a weightlifting study.

Weightlifting experience is not necessary to be considered for the study. Candidates should be between the ages of 18 and 55 and should be able to complete dumbbell exercises. The study is being carried out to determine the ability of a wrist worn monitor device to track activity through accelerometers.

Typical work out sessions will consist of both standard exercises to set boundaries and free form work that is documented by a researcher and includes dumbbell exercises from the first portion of the study.

“Sometimes, these types of studies work well in a controlled lab setting but do not work as well during an unstructured workout,” assistant professor of Kinesiology Scott Conger said. “Our current study for which we are recruiting has two purposes. In Part One, we are going to try to use some more sophisticated methods and additional data channels to improve on our prediction algorithms. We’ll have a research assistant demonstrate each exercise for the participants, then have the participant complete one set of 10 with a light weight. PartTwo is to test these algorithms during an ‘uncontrolled’ workout.”
