Radford University President Penelope Kyle recently joined the “Sit With Me” organization to encourage women to join the technology industry.

According to the organization, there is just one woman for every three men who work in a science, technology, engineering or mathematics job. This statistic continues despite growth happening within the technology industry itself.

To resolve this issue, leaders gather at events like “Sit With Me." The goal is to encourage men and women to recognize and validate the essential role that women have in the technology field. To encourage women to join the industry, the leaders sit together and share their various stories.

The event received sponsorship from the campus chapter of the Association of Computing Machinery and the Radford University Women in Computing Club (WCC)..

“President Kyle really spoke a lot about finding faculty who would bring out the best in us,” WCC President Jess Astacio said. “That really stuck out for me, because you really do experience that at Radford.”

Other WCC members agreed with Astacio.

“Without the encouragement of our faculty, I might have switched concentrations out of Computer Science,” Jude Armstrong said. “We have amazing faculty who go above and beyond to make sure every interested student is successful.”
