North Central College has scheduled its three-person cast to show “Late: A Cowboy Song,” a quirky story from U.S. playwright Sarah Ruhl, April 21-24.
The story is about Mary, a young woman who feels like life is passing her by. Since childhood, her boyfriend has been Crick. He loves to paint, but finds it challenging to connect with people, even Mary. After reconnecting with Red, a female cowboy, Mary wonders if she should step outside conventional life choices to rethink her decisions and change her future.
This story is sympathetic and humorous, showing the longings of three different people who want better connections in life. The play helps the audience to realize that it is never too late to chase after dreams.
“All of Ruhl’s work is linked by humor, poetic language, deep sympathy for her characters, and an embrace of small theatrical magic that can only be shared by an audience in a space together,” David Peterson, North Central visiting assistant professor of theater and the director of the show, said. “Our goal is bring this beautiful poem of a play to life, so that all of us can share in Mary’s frustration with the stagnation in her life, but also realize the possibility of changing that world.”
The cast members are Cody Talkie, Kellyn Maguire and Sarah Fons.
The performance will begin at 7:30 pm April 21-23 with a matinee final performance on April 24 at 2. All of the shows will be at Meiley-Swallow Hall, 31 S Ellsworth St. Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for students and senior citizens.
