Simpson College assistant professors Shane Cox and Aryn Kruse, who teach accounting and education, will present their research on problem-based learning at the Lilly International Conference on Evidence-Based Teaching and Learning.

“Instructors pose a problem to students, who subsequently learn new concepts through researching the main issues,” Cox said of their method. “The information is new to the students; they are not exposed to it beforehand.”

The professors will deliver a talk titled “Problem-Based Learning in Action: Lessons Learned,” at the Bethesda, Maryland, conference, which will take place from June 2-5. The pair attended a conference on the topic in January, learning about how presenting students with a problem and guiding them through the learning process can benefit their understanding.

“Aryn and I made the decision to conduct research through the spring semester relating to the implementation of this method of teaching within our disciplines,” Cox said. “Through that research, we collaborated to put together a proposal to co-present at the 2016 Lilly Conference. We are really excited to attend the Lilly Conference and share all of the information with others from around the world.”
