Brown University recently held its 253rd Opening Convocation with more than 2,500 new undergraduate, graduate and medical students passing through the Van Wickle Gales on their way to the College Green for the event.

Waiting at College Green to greet the students was President Christina Paxson, along with faculty and staff from Brown. Andrew Campbell, a long-tenured professor of medical science at Brown who was recently promoted to dean of the graduate school, gave the keynote speech.

“The way I have approached this has been to remind myself that the things I would like to say to one student would be the same things that I would say to thousands of students," Paxson said. "Convocation is a wonderful opportunity to reach many students all at once. In terms of approach — I reflect back on my undergraduate and postgraduate experiences for inspiration in what I hope to convey at Convocation.”

The event was live-streamed on Brown’s website.
