Ashford University recently donated $10,000 to Horton Elementary School to go toward the purchase of backpacks and school supplies for the 466 students who attend the school.
On hand to present the check to Horton Elementary -- during the school’s backpack distribution ceremony on Sept. 26 -- were Dr. Tony Farrell, Ashford executive dean of the College of Education; Dr. Newton Miller, chair of Ashford’s Department of Education Studies; and Dr. Jennifer Irwin, Ashford faculty member.
“Ashford has been a long-standing supporter of the San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) and believes in enriching the lives of students through education,” Farrell said. “We are honored to have presented a generous grant to students of Horton Elementary.”
Staci Dent, Horton’s principal; Dr. Michael McQuary, SDUSD board president of District C; Dr. Sharon Whitehurst-Payne, board of trustee member of District E of the SDUSD; and a representative from Councilmember Myrtle Cole’s office were also in attendance.
