Blinn College’s Agricultural Sciences Program recently held outreach events for area high school students, including a recruitment program introducing students to the program and a Future Farmers of America (FFA) competition.

The recruitment event, run for 40 students from Brenham, Buton and Hempstead High Schools, featured a tour of the W.J. “Bill” Rankin Agricultural Complex and informative sessions presented on enrollment services, housing and financial aid.

The program plans to host more preview recruiting events this spring.

“This was a trial run for us to get students in here who haven’t seen our complex and what we have to offer,” Assistant Dean for the Division of Agricultural & Natural Sciences Bryn Behnke said. “This is something that will hopefully get the ball rolling and stimulate enrollment.”

That same week, the college hosted FFA Leadership Development events over two non-consecutive days, involving approximately 1,200 local high school students. They competed in leadership events, testing their skills on everything from agriculture demonstrations to public relations and job interviews.

“The students got to see the campus up close and see all the buildings being constructed on campus and were excited about that,” Behnke said.

The Blinn College Agricultural Science Program is a two-year program, with capacity for approximately 1,100 students.
