Blinn College's leadership development program, FutureWorks Academy, recently ran a food drive that garnered 260 pounds of nonperishable food items for the Brazos Valley Food Bank in Bryan, Texas.

“What was intended to be an internal effort by participants within the FutureWorks Academy really grew in a short amount of time,” FutureWorks Academy Financial Aid Assistant Rebecca Reyes, who had the initial idea for the food drive, said. “I was definitely caught off-guard with how much enthusiasm there was.”

The food drive grew into a district-wide effort and involved several departments of the university. The food drive is in line with the college's commitment to service, for which Blinn was placed on the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll.

The college also earned the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching's Carnegie Classification, a distinction only awarded to the top 5 percent of colleges and universities for documented public service.

“When you get a room full of Blinn leaders together, everyone just took the initiative to make their respective departments aware of what we were doing,” FutureWorks student and accounting clerk Cynthia Thomas said. “It couldn’t have happened without the help of so many generous go-getters in the FutureWorks Academy.”
