A Michigan resident attending the University of Michigan will spend $7,300 more per year than a Missourian at Missouri State University-Springfield, according to a Higher Education Tribune analysis of in-state tuition at four-year universities in 10 Midwest states.
The Tribune compared 116 Midwest universities to their peers based on their enrollment, breaking down schools into those with more than 20,000 undergraduates, those with 10,000 to 20,000 undergraduates, and those with fewer than 10,000 undergraduates.
Michigan schools outpace most of their peers at large, mid-sized and small four-year public universities, charging among the highest in-state tuition rates across the board
An in-state student University of Michigan pays 69 percent more than their peers at the University of Nebraska and 75 percent more than those at Iowa State University.
With in-state tuition at $14,634, Michigan Tech University leads schools with 10,000 or fewer students. Residents pay 183 percent more to attend Michigan Tech than Ohioans pay to attend Miami University-Middletown.
While none of the Michigan schools in the mid-size category are among the top-five most expensive, they comprise six of the 15 schools – out of 36 – that charge residents more than $10,000 to attend.
