University of Nebraska-Lincoln students pay a lower tuition than 90 percent of the other large, four-year public universities in the Midwest, according to a Higher Education Tribune analysis of in-state tuition at four-year universities in 10 Midwest states.
The Tribune compared 116 Midwest universities to their peers based on their enrollment, breaking down schools into those with more than 20,000 undergraduates, those with 10,000 to 20,000 undergraduates, and those with fewer than 10,000 undergraduates.
Among the largest universities ranked, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln charges students $8,537 in in-state tuition. By comparison, tuition at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign -- at $15,058 -- is 76 percent higher than the Lincoln campus.
Only Iowa State University, with a tuition of $8,219, and Missouri State University-Springfield ($7,060) charged less than the Lincoln campus.
Nebraska has only one mid-sized public university, the University of Nebraska-Omaha, which charges students $7,204. That’s 51 percent less than the most expensive mid-sized university, Ohio’s Miami University-Oxford, which has an in-state tuition of $14,736.
Three Nebraska schools finished in the bottom 10 among schools with fewer than 10,000 students. Those campuses are the University of Nebraska-Kearney ($6,844), Cadron State University ($6,510) and Wayne State College ($6,462). Wayne State’s tuition was 56 percent less than the most expensive university in that category, Michigan Tech University, which charges $14,634.
