Analysis: Indiana residents pay about a third less to attend Division I schools than peers in other states

Indiana residents pay up to 33.6 percent less to attend a Big Ten school and up to 34.5 percent less to attend a Mid-America Conference school than their counterparts in other states, according to a Higher Education Tribune’s analysis of in-state tuition at public colleges and universities in 10 Midwest states. 

The Tribune compared in-state tuition at 115 schools. Seventy-nine are competitors in 10 athletic conferences, including five Division I schools, five Division II schools and one Division III school. Indiana has schools in six of those conferences.

  • 33.6 percent less to attend Purdue University in the Big Ten than Illinois residents pay to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the same league.
  • 32.6 percent less to attend Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis in the Horizon League than Illinois residents pay to attend the University of Illinois-Chicago in the same league.
  • 34.5 percent less to attend Ball State University in the Mid-America Conference than Ohio residents to attend Miami University Oxford in the same league.
  • 37.9 percent less to attend Indiana State University in the Missouri Valley Conference than Illinois residents pay to attend Illinois State University in the same league.
  • 48.9 percent less to attend either Purdue University-Calumet or Purdue University-Central in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Conference than Michigan residents pay to attend Michigan Tech University in the same league.
  • 33.4 percent less to attend the University of Southern Indiana in the Great Lakes Valley Conference than Illinois residents pay to attend the University of Illinois-Springfield in the same league.
