Analysis: Ohio residents pay up to 39 percent less to attend Division I schools than peers in other states

Ohio residents pay up to 33 percent less to attend either a Big Ten school or a Mid-America Conference school than their counterparts in other states, according to a Higher Education Tribune’s analysis of in-state tuition at public colleges and universities in 10 Midwest states.

The Tribune compared in-state tuition at 115 schools. Seventy-nine are competitors in 10 athletic conferences, including five Division I schools, five Division II schools and one Division III school. Ohio has schools in three of those conferences.

How does Ohio's in-state tuition compare by athletic conference? Ohioans pay…

  • 33.3 percent less to attend Ohio State University in the Big Ten than Illinois residents pay to attend the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the same league.
  • 39.1 percent less to attend Youngstown State University in the Horizon League than Illinois residents pay to attend the University of Illinois-Chicago in the same league.
  • 32.8 percent less to attend the University of Toledo in the Mid-America Conference than Illinois residents pay to attend Northern Illinois University in the same league.
