Missouri residents pay up to 49.8 percent less to attend a Missouri Valley Conference school and up to 36.5 percent less to attend an Ohio Valley Conference school than their counterparts in other states, according to a Higher Education Tribune’s analysis of in-state tuition at public colleges and universities in 10 Midwest states.
The Tribune compared in-state tuition at 115 schools. Seventy-nine are competitors in 10 athletic conferences, including five Division I schools, five Division II schools and one Division III school. Missouri has schools in four of those conferences.

- $7,001, or 49.8 percent, less to attend Missouri State University-Springfield in the Missouri Valley Conference than Illinois residents pay to attend Illinois State University in the same league.
- $4,018, or 36.5 percent, less to attend Southeast Missouri State University in the Ohio Valley Conference than Illinois residents pay to attend Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville in the same league.
- $3,957, or 34.7 percent, less to attend Truman State University in the Great Lakes Valley Conference than Illinois residents pay to attend University of Illinois-Springfield in the same league.
The in-state tuition differences were less pronounced in the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, where Northwest Missouri State University students pay 7.3 percent more than University of Nebraska-Kearney residents. Missouri Southern State University students, however, pay 19.3 percent less than those attending the Nebraska school.
