University of South Dakota issued the following announcement on March 6.
The USD Sanford School of Medicine hosts a public forum Thursday, March 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on therapy and service animals.
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. – The values, applications and issues regarding therapy animals, service animals and assistance animals will be examined during a public forum held Thursday, March 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The seminar will be held in room 106 at the University of South Dakota Health Science Center located at 1400 W 22nd Street in Sioux Falls.
Special emphasis of this seminar will be on the role of animals in healthcare settings, such as hospitals, nursing homes and assisted living centers.
Speakers include Dr. Russ Daily, Extension Veterinarian at South Dakota State University, Dr. Susan Anderson, chair of Family Medicine at the USD Sanford School of Medicine, Beth Jernberg, expert on therapy dogs, Gail Dickerson, Big Paws Canine Foundation, Shirlene Hvinden, Heritage Horses, as well as representatives from Sanford Health, the University of South Dakota, the Good Samaritan Society and others.
The program is sponsored by the working group South Dakota One Health, a collaborative network that regularly brings together animal and health care experts from various South Dakota institutions and organizations to present and discuss issues related to animal-human relationships. Funding is supplied by the Bush Foundation.
Lunch for participants in the March 8 seminar will be provided, and advance registration is encouraged by visiting www.onehealthsd.org. The program is officially titled “The Human-Animal Bond in Healthcare Settings.”
