Colorado School of Mines issued the following announcement on April 18.
A co-ed student team from Colorado School of Mines placed second in surveying and third in gold panning at the 40th International Mining Games in England.
Nine co-ed teams from mining schools from around the world competed in a total of seven events March 30-31. In addition to its strong results in surveying and gold panning, the Mines team placed fourth in both mucking and jack leg. In handsteeling, swede saw and trackstand, the team placed fifth. Mines earned fourth place overall in the co-ed competition.
“Overall, I’m proud with how our team placed,” said co-captain Colton Aldridge, a senior in petroleum engineering. “I’m excited to see how they do in the future.”
Competing on the Mines team were Aldridge, co-captain Carson Eltz, Alex Murray, Stephen Simmons, Marie Hetherington and Roland Daniels.
The games, which showcase traditional mining methods, were started in 1978 to commemorate the 1972 Sunshine Mine disaster in Idaho, which claimed the lives of 91 miners.
