About 50.5 percent of the 2,002 degrees and certificates handed out by the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 2016-17 were to students in Engineering programs, making them the most popular programs that year, according to the latest disclosure from the U.S. Department of Education.

The agency's National Center for Education Statistics shows the private not-for-profit institution in Troy conferred 800 bachelor's degrees and 150 master's degrees in Engineering programs.

But the single most popular program was for a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. Data shows the school gave out 226 bachelor's degrees in Mechanical Engineering, followed by 167 bachelor's degrees in Computer Science and 101 bachelor's degrees in Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering.

The institute enrolled 7,363 students for 2016-17, including 6,265 in undergraduate programs and 1,098 in graduate programs.
