UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA, HUNTSVILLE: UAH welcomes Tobias Buckell noted science fiction author, visiting Eminent Scholar

University of Alabama, Huntsville issued the following announcement on Nov. 29.

Internationally-acclaimed science fiction writer Tobias S. Buckell, will visit UAH as a Humanities Center Visiting Eminent Scholar for the spring 2019 semester.

Tobias S. Buckell, noted science fiction writer and futurist, will visit The University of Alabama in Huntsville (UAH) as a Humanities Center Visiting Eminent Scholar for the spring 2019 semester.

His visit to campus is co-sponsored by the UAH Department of English. Buckell will instruct EH 412/512: Special Studies in Creative Writing — Writing the Fantastic (Science Fiction and Fiction), on Tuesdays from 5:50 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. Class requirements include admission for students who have successfully passed EH 211, orsubmit a piece of work (no longer than 10 pages) for review to eh@uah.edu.

"We are very pleased to give UAH students the opportunity to work with internationally-acclaimed science fiction writer Tobias Buckell," said Dr. Eric Smith, Humanities Center Director and Professor of English. "The Huntsville community has a tremendous interest in science fiction, as evidenced by the almost forty-year existence of the North Alabama Science Fiction Association, which hosts the annual ConStellation, and the success of local SF authors like Les Johnson. Buckell will provide invaluable professional tutelage for those who aspire to write for publication," Smith added.

Buckell a New York Times (NYT) best-selling author has written 10 novels, four collections of fiction, four novellas and 70 short stories. The acclaimed author of The Xenowealth Series, Buckell was recently commissioned to write two NYT best-selling novels in the Halo series.

Born in Grenada (Windward Islands, the Caribbean) Buckell’s novels and stories have been translated into 18 languages. He has been nominated for the Hugo, Nebula, and John W. Campbell Award for Best New Science Fiction Author.

Buckell’s most recent book, The Tangled Lands, is co-authored with Paolo Bacigalupi, winner of the Hugo, Nebula, and John W. Campbell Awards, among many others, and National Book Award nominee. Buckell’s other books include The Trove, Hurricane Fever, Halo: The Cole Protocol and Crystal Rain. Highly in-demand as a university guest speaker/writer in residence, and SF conference presenter, Buckell has given recent keynote talks at Ohio Northern University, St. Mary’s College, IndieLab and Spirit and Place Festival.
