Alma College issued the following announcement on Aug. 27.

Activities promote respect and understanding for people from different cultures and reinforce connections between students and community members.

Fiesta/BaileThe Alma College Hispanic Coalition will observe Hispanic Heritage Month with activities that promote respect and understanding for people from different cultures and reinforce connections between students and community members.

Family-friendly activities include a children’s art class, Latin Dance Night, the annual Fiesta/Baile celebration and an environment, agriculture and health workshop. The complete schedule follows.

Alma College Hispanic Heritage Month Events 2019

National Theme: “Hispanic Americans: A History of Serving Our Nation”

Sept. 3, 10/Children explore arts and crafts of Central America and create their own artwork during a two-week art class sponsored by the Alma Community Art Center from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 3 and Tuesday, Sept. 10. Cost is $30 for both sessions. Location TBA. The student artwork will be displayed at the Alma College Fiesta/Baile on Sept. 27.

Sept. 7/Alma College international students are invited to a study abroad social from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 7 in the Union Board (ACUB) Lounge at Alma College.

Sept. 14/The Alma College Hispanic Coalition sponsors a Latin Dance Night with a Salsa Group Class for beginners from 7:30 to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, at Highland Blush, 118 E. Superior St. in Alma. Cost is $3 if you reserve in advance; $5 at the door. For information, call (989) 466-6860.

National Theme

Sept. 20/Dance professor Rosely Conz offers Samba dance lessons from 6 to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20 in the Stone Recreation Center Multipurpose Room at Alma College. Admission is free and open to the public.

Sept. 27/The Alma College Hispanic Coalition sponsors the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Fiesta/Baile on Friday, Sept. 27 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Tyler-VanDusen Campus Center. The celebration includes live mariachi music, Hispanic-inspired foods, dancing, salsa lessons, children’s activities and more. Admission is free and open to the public. Donations are requested.

Oct. 9/The Alma College Diversity and Inclusion Office sponsors a Diversity Dialogue on “Supporting Latinx Students on Campus” from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday Oct. 9 in Hamilton Commons. All are welcome.

Oct. 10/Alma College and the Mid Michigan Migrant Resource Council sponsor an environment, agriculture and health workshop from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, Oct. 10. More information to come.

Nov. 1-2/The Alma College Hispanic Coalition observes the Mexican holiday Dia de los Muertos (Day of the Dead). More information to come.

National Hispanic Heritage Month is the period from Sept. 15 to Oct. 15 when people recognize the contributions of Hispanic and Latino Americans to the group’s heritage and a culture.
