Alma College issued the following announcement on Sept. 16.
Entry in the 2019 Alma Art Prize.Student artists explore the theme of “movement” in art displays across the Alma College campus. The annual Alma Art Prize kicks off Sept. 16 and continues through Sept. 30.
“Art prize is this terrific experience where students from across disciplines can explore a singular idea in a supportive environment,” says Jillian Dickson, associate professor and the competition’s advisor.
Many of those who participate are art majors; however, students from other departments partake as well, such as those in dance and communication. Participants often work in small groups to create their projects.
Pieces of artwork are made from various materials ranging from the traditional acrylic paint to the less traditional empty Remington shells.
This year the drawing and ballet classes are working together on a piece as well. The first collaboration between the classes will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 17 from 1:35 to 1:55 p.m. and the second from 2 to 2:20 p.m. in front of the Hogan Center.
Art Prize entry.Art Prize entry.“’Faster alone, farther together,’ as they say. I love to begin the academic year with art prize,” says Dickson. “I know when students learn quickly their creative pursuits flourish. When pursued within a community, those efforts go farther, those ambitions are higher and everyone, participants or audience members, benefits from this attitude.”
The student artists are excited for this installation as well.
“I feel like it puts my creative and artistic abilities to the test, says Calum Clow, an art major participating for his third year. “There is definitely something thrilling about starting the semester and immediately diving into a project like this.”
Students will be able to vote for their favorite projects online this year. The winner will be announced Sept. 30.
