Leadership, Management and Administration: Understanding the Differences
Many people view leadership, management and administration as synonymous, but there are significant differences between them that lead to effectiveness in each practice.

A. Brian Leander, Center for Nonprofit LeadershipA. Brian Leander, PhD has been fortunate to have a successful career in organizational leadership and management spanning the greater part of the last twenty-five years in the U.S. and abroad.
Brian joined Adelphi in 2012 as the Assistant Director of the Center for Nonprofit Leadership charged with managing the Center’s initiatives around nonprofit leadership and organizational development, and delivering training programs and consulting services to nonprofit executives. In 2013, he developed and later directed Leading in Community, a leadership development program with a goal to broaden and strengthen the leadership pipeline for people of color and prepare them for nonprofit and community leadership on Long Island. In 2015, Brian was invited to participate in the Adelphi University strategic planning process working with faculty and staff around developing strategic partnerships and economic integration with the Long Island community. He was named Manager of Training and Development in July 2016.
During his more than twenty-year career, Brian has been a consultant delivering executive coaching, training and facilitation to promote strategic change and diversity initiatives in businesses, nonprofit organizations and higher education in the US and abroad. Past and present clients include: New York Lawyer for the Public Interest, New York City Economic Development Corporation, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Long Island and Patchogue-Medford Youth and Community Services, Inc.
Previous to his work at Adelphi University, Brian was the Senior Planning Consultant with the Institute for Organizational Leadership (IOL), a nonprofit educational institution based in Jasper, Georgia. His professional affiliations include the International Leadership Association and the Academy of Management where he has been a presenter. He has also presented at the Randall L. Tobias Center for Leadership Excellence at Indiana University.
Brian received his baccalaureate degree from Dowling College, an MA in Organizational Leadership from Gonzaga University and a PhD in Organizational Leadership from Eastern University. Brian was recently honored with a Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Award by the MLK Birthday Celebration of Nassau County.
