ADELPHI UNIVERSITY: Important Information for Students About Classes

Adelphi University issued the following announcement on March 9.

Important Information for Students About Classes

Dear Students,

As the leadership at Adelphi continues to actively monitor the latest developments regarding the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), we have been working with faculty and student support offices to plan for potential disruptions to our normal academic operations. This includes the possibility that we might temporarily suspend all on-campus instruction and “migrate” teaching and learning using online instructional methods.

Of course, moving all of Adelphi’s classes online is no simple task. To help students and faculty prepare for the possibility of such a move, we are asking faculty across Adelphi to utilize online instruction instead of face-to-face meetings in most of their courses from Wednesday, March 11, to Saturday, March 14. In these classes, your faculty will be reaching out to inform you about how instruction will take place on these dates in place of traditional classroom meetings. Note that online instruction can take a number of forms, from a Zoom or Google Hangouts session with your classmates and professor, to Moodle Discussions or interactive Voice Thread exercises. Your professor will guide you in the exact mode of instruction. So please be sure to keep an eye out for communications from your professors and contact them if your class is scheduled to meet during these dates and you have not heard from them.

Here are a few things to note about resources available to Adelphi students, as well as answers to questions you might have:

This migration of classes will only affect lecture- or seminar-based classes. Classes such as labs, performance-based classes, clinical experiences, and similar activities will meet as usual.

Students who have questions about the accommodations they utilize through the Student Access Office should reach out to that office at sao@adelphi.edu.

If you have any technology-oriented questions about how you will be able to access your classes during this upcoming drill, or in the event that classes are moved online for an extended period of time, please contact the Information Technology (IT) Help Desk for support at 516.8773340 or helpdesk@adelphi.edu. In addition, we strongly encourage you to complete the following Online Readiness Survey so we can determine how we can ensure that students have access to online instruction.

For any specific issues related to one or more of your classes (including attendance-related issues), please reach out directly to your professor(s) to discuss how you can continue to fulfill your academic obligations as we navigate the latest developments across our region.

Please note that during the academic drill described above, all administrative offices and campus services will still be operating according to our normal schedule.

If you have questions about how to continue meeting the requirements of your coursework—during the upcoming drill or at any point throughout the semester—please contact your academic advisor or the Office of Academic Services at oasr@adelphi.edu or 516.877.3150.

Most importantly, I would like to thank all of you for navigating the challenge presented by the coronavirus with patience, thoughtfulness, and respect to all members of our community. We do not yet know whether we will have to suspend on-campus teaching and learning for a period of time, but if it becomes necessary to do so the exercise scheduled from March 11-14 will help us face such a challenge with a clear sense of how we can fully support every single one of our students to ensure your success and well-being.

Sincerely

Steve Everett

Provost and Executive Vice President
