Adelphi University issued the following announcement on April 30.
Adelphi’s Hispanic Community Partnership Program will return for a second year this summer, accepting 20 rising high school seniors in good academic standing, who are eager to pursue higher education.
The deadline for nominations for the free college readiness program is Monday, June 1, 2020.
“In case we are not allowed back on campus due to the coronavirus, the DEI office will work on hosting the program virtually, said Estefania Zea, project manager with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion. “Details will be announced in the near future.”
Those who would be first in their families to attend college will especially benefit from the program, Zea said.
Stephanie Espina, director of undergraduate admissions, who herself is Hispanic, praised the program, now in its second year, as a “unique” one that provides much-needed access to higher education for students within Hispanic communities, plus the resources to prepare for their future college careers. “The intimate program size of 20 students allows for deeper connections and a strong sense of community throughout their experience,” she added.
This summer, participants will learn about the college experience from such workshops as Critical Reading and Writing; Science, Math and Technology Advancement; Navigating the College Application Process; and Financial Literacy for Higher Education.
Meanwhile, the Summer 2019 program continues to have an impact. As of April 7, Espina said, Adelphi has received nine applications and eight of these students have been formally accepted for Fall 2020. “We will continue to monitor the activity, especially final enrollment activity for fall.”
Among the first students from last summer who have applied and been admitted to Adelphi were Analiz Giron, from A. Philip Randolph Campus High School, and Jose Flores, from Hempstead High School, according to the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion.
Espina added that accepted students who took part in this program have received the Adelphi Advantage Award in the amount of $1,000, in addition to their academic merit awards.
