Chatham opens sustainable living residence hall

TribLive

Chatham University has opened the Orchard Hall residence for graduate students at the Richland campus this fall.

Twenty-five graduate students were the new hall's first residents. A masterful structure when it comes to green design, Orchard Hall features solar panels on the roof and a network of fluid-filled pipes in the dorm walls for heating and cooling.

Students can manually change the temperature in their room. Each room comes with a single bed and desk, as well as a pair of stackable dressers and a large window.

The hall is part of a development plan to bring at least 1,000 students to Chatham, according to graduate student Catherine Cat Giles, the hall's graduate resident director and a student in the new Faulk School of Sustainability at Chatham.

Orchard Hall, along with a mosaic of gardens nearby, makes up a part of a $40 million construction project for the university.
