Laurie Hazard, assistant dean for student success at Bryant University, has led the Academic Center for Excellence (ACE) and the Writing Center at Bryant in helping students achieve unparalleled success.
The co-author of numerous books and papers on college readiness and foundations of learning, Hazard has designed programming that enhances student performance. This fall, about 93 percent of the university’s freshmen used the two centers for a total of 10,657 visits. Students utilizing ACE three or more times a semester ended up boosting their GPAs by 0.5 points.
“We guide them to take advantage of all the opportunities that Bryant has to offer to achieve more than they ever thought possible,” Hazard said.
In additional programs, first-year students are now required to take a short online course upon entrance to college to help them transition from high school.
“This online course encourages students to develop the ‘habits of mind,’ and academic skills and attitudes that will create success at Bryant and beyond,” Hazard said. “Additionally, it will help students begin to explore their options in the variety of degrees and programs at Bryant, providing them with the foundation for academic success and achievement.”
The course specifically acclimates students to new technology they will need to use during their time at Bryant, including Blackboard and ePortfolio.
