Bridgewater College student Katie Smith has been awarded the Esther Mae Wilson Petcher Memorial Scholarship.

The nearly $5,000 scholarship is awarded to senior students who perform well in their classes and have been active in leadership roles in campus activities, with an emphasis in religious service.

Smith is a health and exercise science major with a minor in music. She is also a member of the Bridgewater scholastic honor society, the Philomathes Society and a member of the Spiritual Life Board. She serves as an assistant to the college chaplain.

Smith also serves as an orientation leader and is a member of the college’s Symphonic Band and in the Pep Band as a section leader for woodwind performers. She also has membership with the Student Ambassadors Association.

The scholarship is named for Petcher, who was a member of the class of 1944 and served as a missionary in Nigeria.
