Lamar University is hosting its 10th annual ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp from June 19 through July 1.

Offered by the College of Education and Human Development, the free camp is a two-week residential program for middle school students from underserved backgrounds who are and gifted in math and science.

The primary goal of the camp is to help develop the proficiency of students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

“In the 21st century, scientific and technological innovations have become increasingly important," Otilia Urbina, the camp's executive director and assistant professor of professional pedagogy, said. "To succeed in this new information-based and highly technological society, students need to develop their capabilities in STEM to levels far beyond what was considered acceptable in the past.”

Every camp attendee will complete 56 hours of advanced STEM study, which will be taught by educators, collaborative partners and university faculty.

“The key to our success is our collaborative partners' participation," Urbina said. "Our campers leave with wonder for nature and how biodiverse our planet is as well as what their responsibilities are as stewards of our environment."
