Lamar University and
Universidad Veracruzana in Xalapa, Mexico, have finalized an
international partnership that will see the institutions cooperate on foreign
exchange programs for students and academic and research programs for faculty.
“This partnership
gives LU students and their families an opportunity to learn first-hand what
Mexico is all about, aside from the political headlines typically depicted in
the U.S.,” Lamar Professor Rick Carter said. “Our students are engaged with
learning, problem solving and establishing life-long relationships with their
Mexican peers.”
Carter, who teaches kinesiology,
was part of the program’s inception in 2014, when Lamar and Universidad
Veracruzana received joint grant funding through the 100,000 Strong in the
Americas initiative to run a summer study abroad program for health and
nutrition students. Following in the tradition of that initial program, the new
partnership will allow Lamar students and faculty to learn about Mexican
culture as well as their intended fields of study.
“Being that Mexico
shares a common border with Texas and the U.S., our understanding of Mexico and
its people is extremely important in creating an opportunity to share and learn
from one another and to build relationships that will span time,” Carter said.
