Berry College
sophomore Maddie Bess, a Synovus Scholar, is delivering a series of
presentations in Northwest Georgia to explain hydraulic fracturing, or
fracking, to local communities and land owners.
“[The presentation is] purely
academic to provide land owners with information to make informed decisions and
to raise awareness about the issue in surrounding communities using peer-reviewed
scientific data,” Bess said.
Titled “Introduction
to fracking and the implications for Northwest Georgia to seven different area
communities,” the presentation explains how fracking extracts natural gas from
sub-surface shale deposits and how that process can impact nearby communities.
“Some people strongly
support fracking while others do not -- I hope to present clear information on
the true costs and benefits of natural gas fracking, in small communities and
the U.S. at large,” Bess said.
Bess will be making
presentations through Oct. 9.
