Saint Joseph's College psychology major Summer Bennett was recently recognized during the 27th annual Realizing the Dream Banquet on Nov. 5.

The award was granted to Bennett thanks to her fulfillment of several requirements, including being the first in her family to attend college, being an outstanding student during the first year of college and being in the process of successfully completing a bachelor's degree.

The award is made possible through the aid of Lilly Endowment Inc., which gives first-generation students access to funds in order to encourage them to pursue their education to the end with the Independent Colleges of Indiana.

Bennett began attending Saint Joseph's College in the fall of 2016; she has appreciated the school's environment and her education there.

"Everyone is so nice," she said. "And I love that my teachers know every student they have by name."

As part of the award, each student receives a $2,500 check for college expenses. The student's most influential teacher is awarded a $1,000 development grant, as well.

Bennett's teacher of choice was Melanie Gardner, from North Judson-San Pierre High School.

In addition to thanking her teachers for their encouragement, Bennett claims that her mother was a source of constant support.
