Texas and Washington, D.C., see the highest revenues from college athletics, according to data obtained from the U.S. Department of Education.
According to data gathered by the Higher Education Tribune on revenue generated from college athletics from both public and private schools at all levels, with 67 schools, Texas has the highest total revenue from college athletics at approximately $1.15 billion, just over $17 million per school. The University of Texas brings in the most revenue at $182 million. Per capita, Texas sees $43 per person of revenue from college athletics.
If broken down per capita, Washington, D.C., ranks highest with $155 of revenue per person in the population. Of the eight D.C. schools, Georgetown University brings in the most at $37.7 million. D.C. ranked 38th on the list of total revenue with approximately $104 million.
Other high-ranking states per capita include Nebraska ($112 per person), Alabama ($107 per person), Iowa ($105 per person) and Oklahoma ($103 per person). By total revenue, the top five states were Texas, California ($1.08 billion), Pennsylvania ($790.7 million), New York ($731.8 million) and Florida ($728.6 million).
Alaska ranks last on the total revenue list with $19.5 million, while Nevada is last per capita with $25 per person.
