Lamar University will host a master class with world-renowned Japanese violinist Ryu Goto Thursday at its Rothwell Recital Hall.

Goto, who has been playing violin since he was 7 years old, has played in venues such as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Suntory Hall in Tokyo, the Grand Theater in Shanghai, the Herkulessaal in Munich, and the Musikverein in Vienna. He has also performed as a soloist with the London Philharmonic, Wiener Symphoniker, Shanghai Philharmonic Orchestra and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.

“This will be a wonderful opportunity for the community to see one of the world’s preeminent violinists in a teaching setting,” Kurt Gilman, chair of the Mary Morgan Moore Department of Music at the Beaumont, Texas, university said.

Lamar officials encourage the public to come and observe the class for free.

Locals will also have an opportunity to hear Goto play when he performs with the Symphony of Southeast Texas during its concert Saturday.
